GLENDALE GREETS

OLYMPIC ATHLETES

Frank Wykoff and Delos Thurber were showered with community praise not only as Olympic games athletic heroes but also as exemplary types of American manhood as they were formally welcomed to Glendale from their Berlin trip yesterday afternoon and last night.

An automobile parade through the downtown district, a speaking program from a stand in the 100 block of North Brand and a banquet featured the civic reception arranged in their honor under joint sponsorship of the Glendale Junior Chamber of Commerce and 20-30 Club.

WYKOFF THANKS FRIENDS

"Friends," Wykoff said, "the trip was wonderful but it feels great to be home again."  And then visibly touched, added:

"I have Frederick Graham and you to thank for the trip.  It was you who sent me to New York for the Olympic finals in which I qualified for the team.

"I remembered the confidence and faith you placed in me as I competed in the finals and I assure you that this gave me the extra strength that made it possible to make the team."

SPEAKS AT BANQUET

At the banquet last night at Oakmont club, Wykoff recalled that after the Olympic tryouts in Los Angeles those in charge told winning athletes that there were no available funds to send them to the New York finals.

"But Graham, through the columns of the News-Press," he said, "came to my rescue and with the help of residents and organizations it was made possible for me to go to New York."

GAMES PURPOSE TOLD

Both Wykoff and Thurber were introduced to the gathering by Graham, who declared that the purpose of the Olympic games is to bring the youth of different nations into competition and by so doing temper the feelings between countries with an understanding of each others peoples and problems.

Headed by Fred Cady, Olympic team swimming coach, numerous other notables including Dorothy Poynton Hill, games swimming star, addressed the banquet gathering.

COACHES ON PROGRAM

Among other speakers were Mayor Olson, Normal C. Hayhurst, who coached Wykoff at Glendale High School, and Russ Cripe, who coached Thurber at the same school.

Madison H. Fowler, president of the junior chamber, presided at the banquet, and Merle Staub, president of the 20-30 club, officiated at the speaking ceremonies held in the afternoon

________

Back from a victorious trip to the Olympic games at Berlin, Frank Wykoff, the world's fastest human, and Delos Thurber, of of the three highest jumpers in the world, were welcomed home by Glendale, yesterday.

In a blaze of auto horns, amid shrieks of sirens, and applause of fellow townsmen, the two outstanding and upright athletes both products of Glendale graduates of Glendale high and Glendale junior college, were given a fitting welcome by those who have admired them and their achievements for years.

ARRIVED AT S. P.

The boys arrived at the Southern Pacific station at 4:30 o'clock and a few minutes later were whisked up Brand boulevard led by motorcycle officers, and followed by dozens of automobiles, horns tooting.  Up to Lexington the procession went and down Brand again to the truck in front of Lauderdale's store, where the boys were given a real reception with hundreds of Glendalians present.

Merle Staub, president of the 20-30 club was chairman of the day, and after presenting the two boys, introduced Frederick Graham of the Glendale News-Press, who served as master of ceremonies.

OLSON WELCOMES

Mayor Olson was introduced and gave the official welcome for the city, being followed by Sidney Singer, president of the chamber of commerce, who joined in welcoming the boys home.  Both Frank and Delos were then asked to describe their experiences in competition in Berlin, Delos telling how it felt to take third place in the high jump, while Frank described his joy at being anchor man in the 400 meter relay.  He also took fourth place in the 100-meter race.

CROWNING EVENT

The crowning event of the reception occurred last night when the boys were feted at a banquet held at the Oakmont Country club.  Many of the prominent men in the athletics of Southern California were present, chief among these being Normal Hayhurst, Wykoff's trainer at Glendale high, where the foundation for his wonderful achievements on the track were laid.
