Vancouver, July 13, 1929 -- Because of the controversy concerning the 100 Meter race, Percy Williams declined from competition in the 220 Yard Dash. Winners of the 220 Yard Dash were Eddie Tolan, 1st; Frank Wykoff, 2nd; and Pete Bowen, 3rd.  Also included on this page is a newspaper promotion of the X Olympiad coming to Los Angeles in 1932.

OLYMPIC GAMES HERE in 1932

"SECURING of the Tenth Olympiad for Los Angeles in 1932 means far more for this growing section of the country than can be stated on the printed page.

"Thousands upon thousands of eager fans from all sections of the world will gather here (Los Angeles) for the games.  Athletes will swarm to Los Angeles and the worth of the big event is even now beyond estimation.

"Passing of the $1,000,000 bond issue by the voters of California at the recent election assures ample early financing and interested fans may rest assured that every one of the Olympic sports will be handled in a most efficient manner.

"The tenth Olympiad will be the first real Olympic Games ever held in the United States.  To be sure, the 1904 games were held at St. Louis, but the foreign contestants were conspicuous by their absence and the entire meet was nothing but a runaway for the Yankees.

"This will be far from the case in 1932.  To be sure, some of the smaller European nations may be unable to send teams, but England, Germany, Canada, France and Finland, America's foremost competitors, will all be strongly represented.

Foreign countries are right now making more preparations for the Los Angeles invasion than our own athletes.  This statement may be doubted, but Americans who but recently returned from Europe can tell you that there are now 1142 institutions in Germany alone, making vast preparations for the Los Angeles event.

Japan, a country just beginning to find itself in an athletic way, will be here determined to make (continued on page 38) ..."
