Opening Ceremonies 1932

On July 30, 1932 over 105,000 sports fans attended the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics at Los Angeles, California -- except for the President of the United States.

"TOO BUSY CAMPAIGNING"

To Open the 1932 Summer Olympic Games

All other countries to date that hosted the Olympics had as its officiators the head of that country -- including Kings, Queens, prince-regents, and presidents; however, at the 1932 Olympics held in Los Angeles, President Herbert C. Hoover was too busy campaigning for his re-election and sent Vice-President Charles Curtis to represent him instead.

The President's campaign manager may have assured him that the Olympic games never drew substantial crowds -- therefore, it would be a waste of his time. However, there were over 105,000 spectators in attendance on Saturday, July 30, 1932.
