WYKOFF LACKS RESERVE

Coming not in the form of an alibi, but a mere statement of fact from the veteran starter, Johnny McHugh, there is something wrong with Frank Wykoff.  He is not the runner he was last year.

When McHugh hit Denver the other day, he immediately remarked on the changed appearance of Wykoff, whom he hadn't seen since the Boston Olympic trials; and still later at Amsterdam last year.

McHugh believes the tonsil operation which Wykoff had around Christmas, and which necessitated seven blood transfusions is largely responsible for the Glendale boy's lack of strength.

At any rate he has no reserve in the latter part of his races.  He was a yard and a half ahead at 120 yards in the 220 yesterday, but from that point Tolan stepped right away from him.  The same thing was true in the century, where he had no finish.
