When Frank Wykoff stepped off the train at Southern Pacific
Station -- he was only expecting a welcoming
committee headed by the Mayor of Glendale, his old schoolmates from
Glendale Union High School, and a few news reporters -- not
thousands of fans waving Old Glory and Olympic Flags all the way
along the decorated streets leading up and down Glendale's
busy business area.
The music of the Glendale Elks Club echoed loudly along the parade
route as it played "The Conquering Hero Comes,"
and "Hail, Hail, the Gang's All Here," over and over again.
Hundreds of Glendale citizens and spectators decided to join in on
the parade by spontaneously creating a procession of honking horns
that disbanded at Harvard High School Athletic
Field -- where to Frank's astonishment, was another crowd of a
thousand patriots awaiting his arrival.

Frank Wykoff described to reporters the
complaints of U.S.A. athletes who were all housed for weeks on a
floating hotel (the Steamship) -- even during the Olympic games.
