The University of Southern California's track and field team
run away with record breaking titles at the Greenway Field Day track meet in Phoenix,
Arizona. The event was held in April, 1936. Those photographed below
include: Frank Wykoff - 100-yard dash; Roy Staley, high hurdles;
Kenneth Carpenter, discus; Bud Deacon, pole vault; Jack Rand,
pole vault; Harold Smallwood, 440-yard dash; Swede Hanson,
shot-put; and Charles (Chuck) Soper, Javelin.

"Greenway Field Day records in the Open AAU events crumbled before a
slashing raid by California athletes at the Phoenix stadium last night
(April [24?], 1936) and above are
pictured some of the new titleholders."

1. Frank Wykoff,
holder of the word's record for the 100-yard dash,
pictured (to the left) as he prepares to take off --
(see picture 4 for the results of the race) |

2. Roy Staley,
University of Southern California flash, is pictured (to
the right) stepping over the high hurdles. He did it
in 14.5 seconds to set a new Greenway mark, the old record
being 15.2 seconds. |

3. Kenneth Carpenter,
another USC ace, swung into a new Greenway record as
pictured here (to the left) by heaving the discus
164 feet. It was 29 fee further that the old
Greenway mark. |

4. (Frank Wykoff, 100 yd dash) he is shown as he
crosses the finish line a step ahead of Wallace of Arizona
to win his heat in 9.9 seconds. Wykoff equalled the
Greenway record of 9.8 seconds in the finals last night,
winning the event. |

5. Bud Deacon at left, and Jack Rand
at right, tied for first in the pole vault, and sent the
old record of 13 feet, 6 inches up to 13 feet, 11 3/4
inches and collected eight points for themselves,
unattached. |

6. Harold Smallwood, USC, won the 440-yard
event but his mark of 49.5 seconds was not quite good
enough to get into the record-breaking class. |

7. Swede Hanson of the USC team is pictured
(left) getting set to hurl the shot and he put it out for
48 feet 4 inches, to smash the Greenway mark of 46 feet 9
inches. |

8. Charles (Chuck) Soper, former Phoenix
Coyote ace and a member of the USC team, hurled the
javelin 191 feet to take second place in the event, Nolan
unattached, winning with an even 200-foot toss. |
