"PADDOCK'S WORDS
LEADING YOUTH ASTRAY,"
SAYS WYKOFF

Track Star, Talking at Church,
Pleads for Right Living.
_________

Frank Wykoff, former Des Moines boy, record holder for the 100
yard dash, Sunday took Charles Paddock, until recently the world's
fastest human, to task for saying in recent magazine stories
that drink is ruining American athletes.
"Even if what Paddock said is true," declared Wykoff,
"he (Paddock) was 'haywire' to make
such a public statement because of its effect upon American
youth."
MADE FOUR APPEARANCES
"(Paddock) Broadcasting such things before
the boy and girls leads them in belief that if athletes do
drink, it is not so bad if they take up the practice,"
he (Wykoff) said.
Wykoff made four appearances Sunday at Park Avenue Christian church.
In which his grand- father is a charter member and in which his
father and mother hold membership.
"INFLUENCE OF RIGHT LIVING"
He spoke on "The Influence of Right Living." In his brief
talks he pointed out that drinking and smoking and other evils have
no place in his life of a Christian.
He said that preparation is the most important factor in life, whether
one is training for the cinder path, business, or a Christian life.
He pointed out that he spent months training for the
successful race he ran two weeks ago.
FATHER, MOTHER, GIVEN CREDIT
His father (Clifford), and mother (Nellie) were given credit for the
part they played in preparing Wykoff for the success he has
attained in athletics.
Referring to what Paddock said of American Athletes after his
Sunday Night talk, Wykoff said that Paddock had 'slipped'
in the past four years, and had gotten away from some of
the important things necessary in the training of an athlete.
SPOKE AT SUNDAY SCHOOL
"I know of a large number of coaches who have
criticized Paddock severely for his writings painting athletes as
heavy drinkers,"
he (Wykoff) said.
At 10 a.m. Sunday the former Des Moines boy appeared at Park Avenue
Presbyterian Church and addressed the Sunday School. He plans
to leave today on the return trip to California.
