"CALIFORNIA STATE RACE"
OF THE SEASON
LOMBARDI VS. WYKOFF
May 5, 1928
|

Frank Lombardi jump started in the 100 yard race -- was penalized a
yard, and still managed to beat Frank Wykoff to the finish
line. Not only that, Lombardi also equaled the world
record by zooming through the tape ahead of Wykoff after
running 101 yards in 9.6 seconds.
Frank Lombardi then allegedly tore out a page from a year book autographed it, and handed it to
Frank Wykoff to remind him who the next
KING OF THE CINDERPATH
would really be.
|
The autograph of Frank Lombardi in the photograph above may have
been the fire under Wykoff's feet that
lead to his
vanquishing both Lombardi and Paddock by yards
in the 200 Meter Olympic trials on June 16, 1928 ...
"WIN; LOMBARDI EQUALS MARK"
"THE KING AND TWO
REBELS"

Reprint of article above in small print:

King Charles doesn't mean a thing to two of the subjects of
his domain, Frank Lombardi (left) and Frank Wykoff (right).
The two high school rebels discount the fact that King Paddock has
ruled the sprint world for years and years and are defiantly
confident that they will defeat him in the 100-meter race which is
the feature of the June 16 athletic show
at the Coliseum (Los Angeles, CA). Lombardi represents Los
Angeles high; Wykoff represents Glendale high; but Paddock went to
high school so long ago that he has to be reminded that he once did
come from Pasadena High School.

NEXT: Wykoff "peeved" at Paddock for forecasting that he
would not make the Olympic team, goes
into hiding to secretly
practice his strategy to "humble Paddock."
