L. H. Cary was led to believe he broke a world record running
9-1/2s in the 100 yard dash without starting blocks at Princeton in
1893, however, his time was disputed -- just as Wykoff's record time
of 9.4s was being disputed by the International Track Federation.
Wykoff said that there was a note with the photo that said to end the
dispute, Wykoff must run the same time he ran at Occidental (9.4s)
at another championship meet or forever hold his peace.
Frank Wykoff followed L. H. Cary's advice, and one month later --
June 6, 1930, Wykoff again ran 9.4s in the 100
yard dash at a NCAA race in Chicago, to prove his clocked speed of
9.4s was no fluke, and that speed record was made official without
question. |
