Track and Field in Modesto circa 1930
________________________________________________________________________
My dad
(John L. Sarraille) is 90. When he was a teenager he ran the half-mile
for Polytechnic High School in San Francisco. John (Jack) Buchanan and Bob
Kiesel were top high school athletes at the time (around 1929 to 1932).
Kiesel went to UC Berkeley after high school and participated in a
gold-medal Olympic relay team in 1932 (with Frank Wykoff). Buchanan went
to college at SF State.
My dad seems to think that Kiesel and Buchanan participated in the
"Modesto Relays" circa 1930. I see from looking at some on-line
literature that it is stated that the Modesto Relays did not start up
until 1942. Nevertheless my dad seems sure that Buchanan and Kiesel ran
at Modesto. I have found information about Buchanan here:
It shows
that Buchanan ran for Polytechnic High School in San Francisco
in 1929
and 1930, and so it's logical to conclude that the meet my dad talked
about took place in 1929 or 1930.
I have
found out that there were big meets in Modesto in May of 1927 and May of
1932. Maybe there was also a tournament in Modesto in 1930? If you can
point me toward any way of finding out how Kiesel and Buchanan performed
there, or in whatever statewide high school tournaments took place between
1928 and 1933, I'd appreciated it. Probably the events would be 100 yard,
200 yard, and broad jump.
Incidentally, my dad is also interested in finding out information about
the following athletes who were contemporary:
Thanks.
