Charley Parsons to the left - Ralph Metcalfe in the Center, and Frank Wykoff on the Right. Sprinting Positions vary - "Parsons has his feet closer together in a 'bunch' start. Wykoff is using a medium spacing of his feet, and Metcalfe is using a start with a slightly longer spread." (Coach Dean Cromwell - USC)

"Go! The first action of Parson in the 'bunch' start is to bring his shoulders even with his hips as he must get back on a level plane as soon as possible. The actions of a fast start are: quick action of the right foot, push up with the hands and get them moving rapidly, push off with the left foot. Make all actions in a straight line, thereby conserving motions which take valuable time. Note Metcalfe's left hand still on the ground." (Coach Dean Cromwell, USC)

"In the Split second following the preceding picture the most definite change is the position of the hands. There is usually a tendency to permit the left hand to lag behind the action of the right. Stress should be given the fast action of the left hand and arm at this point. Wykoff's position is good. Note that the weight of the body is well forward. There should be no strain in the neck." (Coach Dean Cromwell, USC)

"Note Wykoff's straight right arm action. Metcalfe's left arm should be farther up and forward. Note Parson's close in knee action and the position of the hips. "  (Coach Dean Cromwell - USC)

"In bringing the back foot forward, the sprinter must constantly keep in mind the necessity of keeping the back foot as close to the ground as possible. The shortest distance between two points is the quickest, and the closer the back foot is kept to the ground the quicker the action, because the art that is formed by raising the foot and lowering it then approaches a straight line.

Photo #5 Column 2
This is one of the secrets of a fast start. Another secret is in keeping the knee of the back leg close in to the other knee. There is a quicker neuro-muscular and reflex action obtained by using the muscles on the inside of the leg. This is also decidedly helpful in obtaining a low position of the back foot, as it eliminates undue flexing of the knee and of the leg at the hip which would otherwise be necessary in getting a full natural stride. Because of the body angle which is necessary at this point this action of the knee is absolutely imperative... "
