"Metcalfe is running relaxed while Parsons
and Wykoff appear to be running hard. This is again due a great
deal to the fact that Metcalfe was in light training at the time the pictures
were taken, while the other two were not in top condition."

"Notice carefully, Metcalfe's relaxed hands and body line. The novice can
learn much from Parsons' position. He is losing his
body angle, swinging his shoulders and throwing back his head.
Remember that the body always has a tendency to follow the head."

"Parsons is making (a) fine effort to
maintain form, although he is 'toeing in'
slightly. Throughout the series of pictures
Parsons has displayed a style of running
which is entirely natural to him.

Photo #49 -- Column 2
He was taught this style by his father, whose name still appears on the
record books as a great sprinting champion and no attempt was made to change his
natural running style. An attempt to change a runner's natural style sometimes
results in his losing his natural speed. Changes in
form should always be in the direction of conservation of energy and motion and
to develop a finish 'kick.' Parsons did very well with this style
as he ran the century in 9.7. " (Coach Dean
