"Notice the beautiful form of Metcalfe. He has his knee and left arm well
up and is driving off his left leg. Notice how he brings his right arm back
farther than usual for a lunge at the tape."

"Metcalfe lunges for the tape while Wykoff drives through. Now that the
finish line has been crossed the runners must not slow down their speed too
quickly as this might injure the legs. In fact a great many runners drive
through the tape and run for an additional 5 yards at their top speed,
eliminating the possibility of being nipped at the tape. Metcalfe adopted the
practice of using at least 50 yards to gradually cut down his speed."
