"The Start"
"Note the tremendous drive all sprinters are getting
from their arm action. Metcalfe's left arm still shows a tendency to lag and
might well be the reason for his numerous slow starts. Wykoff's position is
excellent, and he evidently is getting the fastest action as he is enjoying the
approximate three inch advantage at this point." (Coach Dean Cromwell -

"Wykoff has perfect
form. Metcalfe also has very good form excepting for his left arm. His position
is slightly behind Wykoff's and this may be explained somewhat in the fact that
Metcalfe weighs approximately forty pounds more than Wykoff and it takes
slightly longer to start his weight. Parsons' position is also good and when
taking in consideration the camera angle of the picture, he is only slightly
behind Wykoff."

"Note the bound of Wykoff. His body position is good. He is running straight
forward, muscles coordinated and has raised the focus of his eyes to a point
farther down the track. Parsons is starting to twist his body."

"Both Metcalfe and Wykoff are in the same
approximate position. While it appears from
the action that Metcalfe is gaining on
Wykoff, this is not necessarily true as
Wykoff uses a longer stride than does
Metcalfe.

Column 2
Wykoff's rear foot is possibly too high. Parsons is
off-balance, and this is one of the disadvantages of a 'bunch' start or a one
leg start as they frequently throw the runner in this position due to the stress
put on the left leg. This throws the runner to the right and chops the second
stride unnecessarily short in an effort to maintain balance. "

10 - KEEP KNEE CLOSE IN

In the second stride the knee must also be
kept close in. Parsons' picture
overemphasizes this point while Wykoff's
position is very desirable with the possible
exception of the height of his left foot.
In the second stride time can also be saved
if the foot is kept close to the ground, for
the same reasons that were given for the
first stride.

Metcalfe's position is exceptionally good and
although his left arm is but faintly visible, he is evidently getting more
benefit from this arm at this time. These pictures show Metcalfe to be in
the better position, in as much as his foot is lower than Wykoff's and his body
position is better than Parsons'. At the same time he is almost up to
Wykoff in action. However, Wykoff is still ahead and his advantage is due
to his full natural stride. The novice can learn much from these facts.
