LOS ANGELES -- One of the most colorful records in football, that held by Jack Elder, Notre Dame star, goes  into the discard when Frank Wykoff  of the University of Southern California, world champion sprinter, reels off  the century (100 yd dash) in 9-5/10 seconds  with   full football equipment. 

Elder's record was 11-1/6 seconds in the unusual 'unofficial event.' Wykoff undertook the speed trial to settle a bet with fraternity brothers.
